His warbling tones are known the world over, but Morrissey has chosen to use the spoken word rather than melancholy song to express his latest work.
The former Smiths frontman has released a new video for his forthcoming track 'Earth Is The Loneliest Planet', and in it stars Pamela Anderson.
The pairing of Morrissey and Pamela may at first seem jarring, but when you consider their views on animal rights the match makes perfect sense.
Earth Is The Loneliest Planet: Pamela Anderson stars in Morrissey's new spoken word video
The Meat Is Murder singer once said 'eating meat is like biting into your grandmother' while the former Baywatch star credits her 'affinity with animals' for saving her after she was gang-raped as a child.
Both are staunch vegetarians – Pamela a vegan – and animal rights activists who may well have bonded over their shared passion for the issue.
In the video, though the Salford-born singer exchanged his lamenting vocal style for narration, it's clear his unconventional lyricism is ever present.
Los Angeles: The video was shot on top of the Capitol Tower in Hollywood
Who hears when animals cry? Morrissey and Anderson are both vegetarians who no doubt bonded over their shared love for non-humans
Lyrical: He may not be lamenting in his normal melancholy tones but the spoken words are still typical of Morrissey's poignant style
The video opens with Morrissey, walking across the top of the Capitol Tower as the sun sets on the horizon, and in voice over, he says 'Earth is the loneliest planet of all, Earth is the loneliest planet of all.'
Does she own a copy? Morrissey has been vocal about his views on animal slaughter over the years, most famously through his 1985 album Meat Is Murder
'Day after day you say "one day", day after day you say "one day",' until the camera introduces Anderson into the shot, observing the view of Hollywood from the rooftop edge.
'But you're in the wrong place and you've got the wrong face, and humans are not really very humane; and Earth is the loneliest planet of all.'
Morrissey walks over to Pamela; she gives a wry smile but he looks up into the distance unseen, while she keeps her eyes trained on him.
He walks away and she is left contemplating the silence in his wake.
'Earth Is The Loneliest Planet' is the third single from Morrissey's upcoming LP, 'World Peace Is None Of Your Business,' and the short film (directed by Natalie Johns) was exclusively revealed for the first time on NME.com.
It follows the release of the title track and 'Istanbul,' which both came with spoken word videos too.
'Earth Is the Loneliest Planet' is released on June 3rd via Harvest Records, while the album follows on July 14th and is available on iTunes.
Morrissey is currently touring North America.
Third single: Morrissey has already released the title track for his new album and Istanbul, both accompanied by spoken word videos too
