It was claimed the 34-year-old had died after a fatal car crash, drawing concern among his friends and family.
Probed by a photographer on the rumour, the British-born actor described it as a "bad joke" that "left his friends scared".
"It's kind of in bad taste to joke about people dying," Charlie told a paparazzi working for TMZ.
Questioned furthered on how he would prefer to die onscreen, the actor hesitantly replied: "I'm superstitious, I'm not going to start predicting my own death!"
The Pacific Rim star recently spoke in depth about turning down his role in the movie adaptation of Fifty Shades Of Grey to Jamie Dornan, describing his decision as "heartbreaking".
"I felt like I had an interesting take on that character and felt like I could have done a good job of playing Christian Grey, otherwise I wouldn't have taken it on in the first place," he told Life & Style earlier this month.
"When you put the time into something like that and a character comes alive in your mind, it's heartbreaking not to be able to play him," he continued.
"It was definitely kind of heartbreaking having to say goodbye to that character and not bring it to life."
