The Musketeers Writer Confirms Next Series Will Be More Violent, Is It Trying To Compete With Game Of Thrones?
Jun 27th 2014, 11:41

If you're a fan of the BBC drama The Musketeers, be prepared for a more raunchy show after show writer Adrian Hodges confirms that the second series has been "pushed harder" when it comes to sexuality and violence.

With the huge success of the incredibly brutal and violent HBO series Game of Thrones, it's no wonder that other TV head honchos want to emulate that kind of popularity with their own shows.

Cue The Musketeers writer Adrian Hodges, who told the Daily Star that when it came to writing the second series of the show he wanted to push things "harder".

He reasoned that when they wrote the first season, it was scheduled to be on at 8pm, meaning more graphic scenes had to be vetoed. However, when the show was aired it was on at 9pm, which meant that lots of sexy stuff could have happened all along!

So apparently that's exactly what's going to happen next series. Hodges explained: "We wouldn't have done the first series in that way, had we been doing the whole thing as a 9pm show.

"We would have pushed the tone much further in terms of sexuality and violence.

"So for this second series, I knew we were going out at 9pm and so we have pushed it harder for this audience."

Musketeers has already proved to be popular, bringing in an impressive average of 6 million viewers per episode. It also boasts a creditable cast list, featuring Tom Burke, Luke Pasqualino and Santiago Cabrera.

One face who won't be reappearing in the second series is Peter Capaldi. From evil villain Cardinal Richelieu to the ever-changing Time Lord in Doctor Who.

This has proved to be a challenge for the writers, who had to quickly find someone to fill the role of baddie.

However, Hustle actor Marc Warren has stepped in to save the day. Adrian added: "Marc will be the villain and he will run through the whole series, coming in and out of the boys' stories like The Cardinal did."

Are you looking forward to watching the revamped show?
