Hugh Jackman has posted a touching tribute to Robin Williams, putting a picture of the pair on his Instagram account.

The actor put the photo up on 'Throw Back Thursday' and left a heartfelt message with the image.

It showed Jackman at the Tony Awards with Williams in 2011.

He captioned the picture: '#TBT ... Remembering laughing with Robin backstage at the #tonyawards in 2011. Robin Williams — you made us laugh til we cried. Rest in peace, mate.'

The pair got to know each other when they lent their voices to director George Miller's Happy Feet.

The two men also shared another link - Jackman is currently putting the finishing touches to his role as the pirate Blackbeard in the movie Pan.

Williams starred as a grown up version of the J.M Barrie character in the film Hook in 1991.

In the movie he played Peter Pan as a cut-throat merger and acquisitions lawyer who ends up married to Wendy's granddaughter.

Captain Hook (Dustin Hoffman) kidnaps his children, and Peter has to rescue them.

Williams was discovered dead on Tuesday in his home in San Francisco.

Tributes from around the world and across the celebrity fraternity have highlighted his comic and acting genius.

It was revealed on Wednesday Williams had recently discovered he was suffering from Parkinson's Disease.

In a statement, Williams' wife, Susan Schneider, said in a statement he wasn't ready to share the diagnosis with the world, and added that his 'sobriety was intact' at the time of his death.

'Robin spent so much of his life helping others. Whether he was entertaining millions on stage, film or television, our troops on the frontlines, or comforting a sick child - Robin wanted us to laugh and to feel less afraid, she said.

'Since his passing, all of us who loved Robin have found some solace in the tremendous outpouring of affection and admiration for him from the millions of people whose lives he touched.

'His greatest legacy, besides his three children, is the joy and happiness he offered to others, particularly to those fighting personal battles.

'Robin's sobriety was intact and he was brave as he struggled with his own battles of depression, anxiety as well as early stages of Parkinson's Disease, which he was not yet ready to share publicly.

'It is our hope in the wake of Robin's tragic passing, that others will find the strength to seek the care and support they need to treat whatever battles they are facing so they may feel less afraid.'

Parkinson's disease is a progressive disorder of the nervous system that affects movement. It develops gradually, sometimes starting with a small tremor in one hand.
