True Blood Star Joe Manganiello On Jaw Dropping Cliffhanger And Why It 'Had To Happen'
Jul 7th 2014, 10:57

So if you caught the latest episode of True Blood then you'll be just as stunned as we are as yet another of our favourite characters met their maker as the third episode of season seven, Fire In The Hole, saw Alcide Herveaux's brutal end.

Fans were dealt an almighty blow when Bon Temp's humans shot the werewolf in the chest and then the face and we're going to hold our hands up and admit we did NOT see that coming!

Well one guy who did is the man behind the wolf, actor Joe Manganiello who boasts: "I called it! I called it last year.

"As soon as I read the Season 6 finale and saw that Sookie [Anna Paquin] got with Alcide, I turned to my then-girlfriend right away and said, 'They're going to kill me — and if they don't, they're crazy.'"

And he explains why: "Storytelling-wise, you have to get Sookie with Bill [Stephen Moyer]; that's the beginning of this whole story. That's the A plot of the show," he said.

"The B plot is Eric [Alexander Skarsgard]. You also have to have her deal with Eric. I'm not even the C plot — because that would have been Sam [Sam Trammell], or Warlow [Robert Kazinsky] or something. I'm like indigo on the rainbow if Bill is the red."

According to Joe, his character had to die to keep the show's heroine, Suki, in a good light. "Alcide would be a smart choice for her inevitably, but you can't have me wind up with her at the end," he said.

"So, what? They're going to have her break up with me? They're going to have her break the heart of the best guy she knows? The guy who would do anything for her? They can't do that because then the audience is going to hate her for breaking his heart. That's why they had to kill him."

So there you have it. We can all feel slightly better knowing that Alcide just HAD to die!

And if you thought that was end of all the trauma of season seven, Joe teases: "Anybody could go at any time, and it makes you wonder who will survive until the end." We can barely cope!

The final series of True Blood continues on Sundays at 9pm on HBO.

Alcide and Sookie's drunken hookup - Alcide had been trying to bag himself a bit of Sookie action for a while and we thought he had finally won his chance as a drunk Sookie plants a steamy kiss on the werewolf's lips. He then picks her up and takes her to the bedroom where an intoxicated Sookie takes one look at his flawless pecs and... voms everywhere! What a waste! (Youtube/FionaDuffyMonteiro)
