Ed Sheeran Reaches Adele's Record As New Album 'X' Holds Onto Number One For Fifth Week

By Alicia Adejobi On July 28, 2014

It's no surprise that Ed Sheeran is currently sunning himself on a yacht in Ibiza as he has just claimed his fifth week at number one in the UK with his critically-acclaimed second album 'X,' catching up to Adele's record for the longest-running consecutive number one since 2011.

The 'Sing' hitmaker has sold a whopping 400,000 copies of the record in the country so far since its release on June 23 according to the Official Charts Company, and has kept Dolly Parton's 'Best Of,' Sam Smith's debut 'In The Lonely Hour' and George Ezra's 'Wanted On Voyage' from the top spot once again this week.

Spending a fifth week reigning at number one means 'X' has become the longest-running consecutive chart-topping album since Adele's record-breaking feat with her second record '21,' last week which enjoyed 11 weeks in a row at the top – although it earned 23 weeks at number one in total.

Ed has also scored the longest consecutive number one run for a British male solo act since James Blunt released 'Back To Bedlam' in 2005 and spent eight weeks dominating the album charts.

It seems to have had a domino affect for Ed, 24, whose smash hit debut album '+' has re-entered the top 40 again and is now sitting pretty at number 15. '+' was released in September 2011 and spawned the hits 'The A Team,' 'Lego House' and 'You Need Me, I Don't Need You.'

The lead single from 'X,' 'Sing,' which was produced by Pharrell Williams, became the singer's first ever number one.

No doubt celebrating his unstoppable success, Ed was seen letting loose while chilling with a group of his friends and his rumoured new girlfriend on a yacht in Ibiza yesterday.

A day after his performance at Ibiza Rocks, Ed looked as though he didn't have a care in the world as he jumped into the water hand-in-hand with his gorgeous reported new love and lounged around laughing and chatting with his pals.

It's pretty great to be Ed right now!
