After the stonking success of Broadchurch in the UK, the US got on board by creating their own version, Gracepoint, casting original actor David Tennant, as the maindetective. The show is set to hit screens next month and even before the first episode has bene aired, Tennant has received some criticsm over his accent.
It was reported that David received criticism over his accent when critics saw a trailer for the new drama which showed the actor, who plays the role of Emmett Carver, speaking in a Californian accent. Apparently, they felt Tennant should'nt have changed his accent for the role and stuck with the Scottish twang.
Reacting to the criticism, the Daily Record quoted the actor as saying: "If they're fans of Doctor Who, I didn't use a Scottish accent in that, either. I used an English accent in that. I think doing different accents is part of the job of acting really. It's something that I quite enjoy the challenge of.
"Obviously, it's something that you take seriously, and you work with dialect coaches to help you, and then you practice until it's in your bones. It's part of what actors do. I always like seeing people transforming themselves in whatever way that might be, and a different accent is part of that."

And whilst the critics may have been unhappy with the way David carried off an American accent, he got support from his co-star Kendrick Sampson who praised his accent, saying: "He speaks in his original accent in between takes so to see him seamlessly go between accents was amazing. He just transforms."
Accents aside, and the producers of Gracepoint won't be the same as Broadchurch. Speaking about the drama at the Television Critics Association panel for the show, Executive producer Dan Futterman said: "We all talked about how to transplant the show to America and the first order of business was don't screw up what works, because it was fantastic. We didn't want to break what was working."
Producer Carolyn Bernstein added: "We did consider different starting places, different ideas for the first episode, and I think we kept coming back to the first episode of 'Broadchurch,' not shot for shot, but the way the story was told, was so well done. Why would we contort ourselves to figure out a different way to tell the story?"
