She may be best known for her roles as the loveable 'girl next door', but Reese Witherspoon is determined to let fans see another side of her by taking on darker, grittier roles.
Gracing the cover of October's Vogue, the 38-year-old said, "When people underestimate me, it's actually a comfortable place for me. 'Oh, that's what you think I am; well, no, I'm not.' I'm a complex human being. I have many different shades."
And her upcoming film, Wild, is set to challenge every perception people have of the Legally Blonde star, as she takes on the role of Cheryl Strayed, a woman who decides to hike more than a thousand miles of the Pacific Crest Trail alone, in a journey of self-discovery, following her divorce, the death of her mother, and years of reckless, destructive behaviour.

The biographical drama saw Reese learn how to act like she was taking heroin as well as acting out some raunchy sex scenes, which she employed a hypnotist to help her out with.
"I just didn't want to hear, 'Oh, we don't want to see Reese have sex...Oh, can we not have any profanity?'" she told the mag. "I wanted it to be truthful, I wanted it to be raw, I wanted it to be real."
But the mother-of-three revealed that she was able to relate to the character's dramatic tale by reflecting on her past experiences.

Talking about her public perception, and touching on her split from Ryan Phillippe in 2008, she said, "Nobody knows what goes on behind closed doors, but I think there's a general sense now that I've lived a pretty textured life.
"So many of the things that Cheryl goes through in the book I've been through, you know? I've been married, I've been divorced. Cheryl has this idea that the things that have happened to you are part of you. There's something really beautiful about that idea."
But whilst the interview with the fashion bible has allowed Reese to be seen in a different light, fans have complained that the star's appearance has been dramatically altered in the shots.
Complaining that Vogue edited the images too much, several fans took to the mag's Instagram page, with one commenting, "[it] doesn't even look her," whilst another added, "She's a gorgeous woman and it's great that someone that actually has talent and class got on the cover but why so much photoshop? She doesn't need it"
