Denzel Washington's The Equalizer Set To Knock Maze Runner Off Top Of US Box Office
Sep 25th 2014, 14:13

Looks like Denzel Washington's reunion with Training Day director Antoine Fuqua is going to pay off with predictions of a Box Office opening weekend of over $30 million and a number one, for The Equalizer.

The movie, which cost $55 million to make, stars Denzel alongside Chloe Moretz and the unlikely coupling will make for a good weekend, though studio bosses are keen to play down the premature reports claiming it'll be more likely between $25 and $30 million, according to early forecasts.

The action thriller set in Boston sees Denzel in a comfortable role as a former member of special forces, who has turned his back on that kind of life, that is until he meets Moretz, a young girl under mixed up with the Russia mafia. Based on the television series, it's pretty obvious that Washington would excel in the 'tough-guy-with-a-heart' role and while we're not predicting Oscars, it's had rave reviews so far.

Moretz and Washington have been on a whirlwind promotion for the movie, with multiple premieres and stacks of interviews, and with news the studio has already started developing a sequel, we're guessing the prediction for a big opening weekend is going to be music to their ears. It's not got too much in lines of competition.

Denzel set to top the Box Office with the Equalizer

The Maze Runner, which beat Liam Neeson's A Walk Among The Tombstones to reach the top spot last weekend, is still expected to chart high. That grossed $32.5 million in it's opening weekend, so unless it can do that again, it looks like the Equalizer will be going in at number one. Second place will probably be an all out battle between the Dystopian drama and Laika Animation's The Boxtrolls, which is also released this week.

According to forecasts thought, it's likely to be the Maze Runner to win out with a preditcion to take $15.6 million while Boxtrolls trails with $14 million.
