UK Chart Analysis: Jessie Ware Finally Bags A Top 40 Single But It's Norway's Time To Shine

By Shaun Kitchener On August 11, 2014

She's one of the most critically acclaimed artists at work today, and her upcoming second studio album is set to fly off shelves when it's released later this year. But as far as hit singles go, Jessie Ware's tally has remained firmly on zero.

This week, however, she's made serious progress in reversing that trend; as new cut 'Tough Love' makes a quiet but well-deserved entry into the Top 40 at No34. OK, so it's not exactly a game-changing chart position, but hopefully this is the beginning of a much bigger chapter in her career, with much more still to come.

She told the Official Charts Company: "I don't think the song is radio friendly at all! This song was just to give people a taster of what's to come, so for it to chart is crazy and really reassuring ahead of the new album."

Meanwhile, at the very top of the pile, Nico & Vinz have become the first Norwegian act in 28 years to rocket to No1 in the UK. It was early 1986 when A-Ha's 'The Sun Always Shines On TV' gave them their only chart-topper on our shores, and while other acts featuring Norwegian members have also had time at the top (ABBA, Aqua and A1 to be precise), Nico & Vinz are the first completely Norwegian outfit to pull it off since; and it's all courtesy of their massively popular tune 'Am I Wrong'.

While Magic! dip to No2 with 'Rude', OneRepublic have scored their third consecutive Top 10 smash with 'Love Runs Out'; following 'If I Lose Myself' and chart-topper 'Counting Stars'. It's their sixth Top 40 track in the UK overall; the other three being 'All The Right Moves' and breakout hits 'Stop & Stare' and 'Apologize'.

Over on the album chart, Ed Sheeran has racked up a seventh week in command with x [multiply], with Dolly Parton holding firm at No2. Ed may be deservedly stealing the show - but if his album didn't exist, Parton would have been at No1 for a few weeks now. Can you imagine how amazing it would be if Dolly Parton was No1 in the UK in 2014 for an extended period of time...?

Busted's Charlie Simpson arrives at No10 with Long Road Home; five places lower than the spot it occupied at the midweek stage but still enough to make him the highest-charting new entrant of the week. Pixie Lott's third album arrives at No15 - nothing spectacular, but a sigh of relief might be in order after its lead-in single 'Lay Me Down' failed to register in the Top 100 earlier this month.

Magic!, finally, can't quite nail a hit album off the back of one hit single: their record Don't Kill The Magic is new at No19; ten places lower than its midweek placement.
