The first trailer for the final installment of The Hobbit has finally been released and it sure looks as though we are going to be having a full-blown, nail-biting last chapter on our hands as the war is on!

The Hobbit: The Battle Of Five Armies, will bring Peter Jackson's trilogy to a close in a truly epic finale, which as the title suggests sees the five armies gearing up for battle as well as the unstoppable dragon, Smaug continuing his blazing reign over the helpless souls of Lake-town.

Set to a chilling Hobbit-penned lullaby, the trailer promises that the last in the series is going to be a far from easy watch and even hints at the possible death of Gandalf! Well, any one who's seen the Lord of the Rings trilogy will know what happens there but it's safe to say – no one's got a free pass to the end.

Evangeline Lilly, Orlando Bloom and Cate Blanchette reprise their roles as the beautiful elves while Martin Freeman leads the all-star cast as the lovable Bilbo Baggins who against all odds, has the almighty task of slaying the giant that is Smaug the dragon.

The cast and crew from the final installment arrived at last weekend's Comic Con to kick off the hype, with Cate Blanchette sharing her experiences of returning to the Miramar studio, explaining: "It was like nothing had changed," she told The Telegraph.

"Peter and Fran and Philippa and all of the guys at WETA had made these extraordinarily successful - financially and creatively successful films - but their filmmaking practice hadn't changed at all. You still felt like you were making an independent film that was ridiculously well-resourced."

Elfin co-star Orlando Bloom revealed he was sad to say goodbye to Legolas, the role that launched his glittering career and has been such a huge part of his life for the past 15 years.

Comic Con 2014: '24' Movie In The Works? Director Reveals: 'We're Still Talking About It'

"It's sad to say goodbye in many, many ways. I felt very lucky to do it actually. I felt like I got a chance to create a backstory for a character that goes into 'Lord of the Rings.' And I think this movie will tie up beautifully all of the characters' stories into a nice little bow so that you'll be able to go straight in and watch 'Lord of the Rings.' You'll be able to do the whole thing at some point."

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies opens in cinemas nationwide on December 17.
