Sam Smith has come out as gay after revealing his new album is about a man he used to love.

The British singer confirmed his sexuality in an interview with The FADER, where he talks about the unrequited love he has felt in his romantic life.

'In the Lonely Hour [his album] is about a guy that I fell in love with last year, and he didn't love me back,' Sam, 22, told the magazine.

'It's all there now, and I can move on and hopefully find a guy who can love me the way I love him,' Smith explained.

But despite revealing for the first time his sexual preference, Sam understandably believes it is a 'non-issue' in this day and age.

'I've been treated as normal as anyone in my life; I've had no issues,' the singer said. #I do know that some people have issues in life, but I haven't, and it's as normal as my right arm.

He added: 'I want to make it a normality because this is a non-issue. People wouldn't ask a straight person these questions.'
