She made trainers and prom dresses look good when she first burst onto the musical scene, and now Lily Allen has spoken about how her signature look came about.
In a new interview with V magazine, Lily discusses her style with editor-in-chief Derek Blasberg, and how she was given her older sister Sarah's clothes to wear.
When asked how old she was when she first started rocking that look, Lily said: 'Twelve? Thirteen? I have an older sister so I had her hand-me-down dresses, and I always just like sneakers when I was a teenager.'
Hand-me-downs: Lily Allen tells V magazine that her signature prom dress and trainer style started off when she was given her sister's dresses as a child
Allen explains that wearing trainers were more practical for things 'like for warehouse raves,' where her typical outfit would be made up of 'baggy trousers with fluorescent underwear and little Nike bra tops,' because 'you can't have heels in that situation.'
The singer – who has released her third studio album entitled Sheezus – also speaks about seeing her signature look be replicated on the Chanel couture runway earlier this year.
'That was a big moment for me, I guess. But I stumbled upon that look- no pun intended- because I thought I was too young to have high heels,' Allen said.

Her style has evolved over the years, and she compares her appreciation of fashion to her love of different musical genres.
'The two [music and fashion] are intertwined for everyone,' Lily explained.
'Style and music have always gone hand in hand. But in my case, I'm not really into one specific type of music, so maybe that's why I dress completely different all the time.'
Lily also discussed the reasoning behind the appearance of lewd balloons spelling out 'Lily Allen has a baggy p***y' in her Hard Out Here video.
She said: 'That was a riff on that Robin Thicke video, the one that had the balloons that said he had a big d**k.
'The director thought it would be funny if we got the same balloons and said that I had a big d**k. But I said, "Hmm that's not really funny. Let's say I have a baggy p***y." And he just looked at me like I had 10 heads.'
The full interview appears in the next issue of V magazine, on newsstands worldwide.
