Sherlock To Return With 'One Of His Biggest Mysteries Yet'
Jul 2nd 2014, 13:25

Finally we have some official news on the new series of Sherlock, with BBC One revealing some big news on Twitter today.

After teasing us all morning with the promise of a big reveal at 2:21pm today (221B Baker Street, geddit?), the secret is finally out.

Posting a series of tweets today, the BBC asked: "Miss me?" #Sherlock, the hit @BBCOne drama, will return for a Special, followed by a series of three new episodes. #221back.

"After the briefest of exiles, #Sherlock will return to face one of his biggest mysteries yet... "

Alongside a photo of Sherlock's enemy Moriarty (Andrew Scott), the Twitter account teased: "why is Moriarty's face being broadcast on every television in the land? #Sherlock #221back."

We've got a shooting date for the new series of Sherlock! (BBC)

"Shooting on the #Sherlock special will begin in January 2015, with the series shooting later next year. We're ready to unleash the most shocking and surprising series of #Sherlock yet. The only thing is to expect is the unexpected..."

"The Game is on - again!", the announcement ended.

Speaking about the return of the series, co-creator, writer and executive producer Steven Moffat said: "A special, plus a new series of three episodes - it's a record-breaking run! Of course, it's far too early to say what's coming, but we're reasonably confident that the very next thing to happen to Sherlock and John, is the very last thing you'd expect ...."

Co-creator, writer and executive producer Mark Gatiss added: "Series Four! At last ! It's always special to return to 'Sherlock' but this time it's even more special as we're doing...a Special! Not only THAT, we'll then be shooting three more episodes which will take Sherlock and John Watson into deeper and darker water than ever before...The whole 'Sherlock' team are terrifically excited to return for four new adventures."

Sue Vertue, Executive Producer added that Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman's hectic movie schedules mean it has taken awhile to find the time to shoot with the stars: "It's taken a little while to get the dates sorted as none of the boys are exactly sitting back twiddling their thumbs but there was unanimous goodwill to make this work so we're thrilled that 221b is going to be inhabited again."
