'There Will Be No Flirting': Doctor Who's Peter Capaldi Rules Out On Screen Romance With Jenna Coleman
Jul 28th 2014, 10:48

Listen up Doctor Who fans, there won't be any loving looks across the Tardis or any secret hand holding between the Time Lord and his faithful assistant, Clara. Peter Capaldi has confirmed that "no flirting" will take place between him and Jenna Coleman on the show.

In the months that followed the announcement that Peter Capaldi was going to be replacing Matt Smith as the new Doctor, speculation began about whether the new and more mature Doctor who embark on a romance with Jenna's Clara.

On the subject of a romance, editor of www.drwho-online.co.uk, Sebastian J. Brook told EntertainmentWise last year that he couldn't see a romance forming between the Doctor and Clara.

He said at the time:

"It's going to be good because it will change the dynamic in the sense of we're not just going to have a romantic relationship with the Doctor now. It's going to be more traditional."

And Sebastian was right as Peter told the Sunday Times magazine: "There'll be no flirting, that's for sure. It's not what this Doctor's concerned with."

Hinting that his decision may have not gone down too well, the actor who will be the 12th reincarnation of Doctor Who continued: "It's quite a fun relationship, but no, I did call and say, 'I want no Papa-Nicole moments'. I think there was a bit of tension with that at first, but I was absolutely adamant."

Teasing fans with what is in store for the new series, which will be kicking off on August 23 on BBC One, Peter added: "It's going to be a bit different from what we've seen over recent years. A bit more gravity, Some situations are more sombre and I think there are more rooted dramatic scenes.

"Over the past two or three years, which I've loved, there has often been a breathless vigour; we still have that attack, but we have another level of drama, another tone. And the scenes are longer."

We can't wait!

It will give fans a bit of a break from the cycle of Doctor, assistant romances that have become a trend since the reboot of the franchise, eight series ago.

The modern Doctor Who has seen way more slushy clinches, remember these?

Rose Tyler

(BBC / Youtube)

In the era of David Tennant's Doctor and Billie Piper's Rose, fans were left on the edge of their seats wondering if the Time Lord and Rose would ever kiss and they finally did when Rose planted a smacker on the Doctor after he whispered something in her ear.

Amy Pond

(Youtube / BBC)

We can't forget the moment Amy tried to seduce the Doctor on the eve of her wedding. But it wasn't meant to be as the Doctor did the right thing and took her to her fiance Rory Williams. Whilst the Amy may have not got her happy ending with the Doctor, she did with Rory whom she married at the end of the fifth series.

Clara Oswald

(BBC Pictures)

Matt Smith hinted at a possible romance with Jenna's Clara when he told the Radio Times in 2012: "I think, in one way or another, the Doctor is always attracted to his companion and he's certainly taken by this striking young lady."  And he was right as the first hint of a romance took place in the 2012 Christmas episode where the Doctor and Clara locked lips.
