Becky Hammon will retire after 16 years in the WNBA at the end of this season.

But she already has her next gig lined up.

The six-time All-Star has been hired by the San Antonio Spurs as an assistant coach to Gregg Popovich.

"I very much look forward to the addition of Becky Hammon to our staff," Popovich said in a statement Tuesday. "Having observed her working with our team this past season, I'm confident her basketball IQ, work ethic and interpersonal skills will be a great benefit to the Spurs."

Technically, Hammon is NOT the first female to serve on an NBA coaching staff.

Lisa Boyer - now associate head women's basketball coach at South Carolina - served under John Lucas in Cleveland in 2001-02. However, she did not travel with the team, working with the Cavaliers' staff as an offshoot of her job as assistant coach for the WNBA's Cleveland Rockers.

"A glorious day for the NBA and an awesome day for women," said Hall of Famer Nancy Lieberman. "I'm so proud of Becky, she's put in the work. The Spurs are not a bells and whistles organization, they didn't do this for PR. They did it because they believe she is the best person for the job."
