Met Opera talks halted for financial review
Aug 2nd 2014, 23:58

NEW YORK (AP) — The Metropolitan Opera and two of its unions have agreed to a one-week contract extension while an independent analyst studies the organization's finances.

The Met says the parties agreed to the review Saturday as a federal mediator worked to end a labor dispute threatening to shut down one of the world's renowned cultural institutions.

The Met had said it would lock out workers at 12:01 a.m. Monday.

The one-week extension applies to contracts with the American Guild of Musical Artists and the Associated Musicians of Greater New York. Those unions represent the Met's singers and musicians.

Discussions with 10 other unions with outstanding contracts are temporarily on hold. The Met reached new agreements with three unions earlier this week. The organization says the financial review will be confidential.
