Bridesmaids director Paul Feig in talks to direct.
A third Ghostbusters movie doesn't look promising after the first two films' director Ivan Reitman dropped out of the project in March, but the franchise may reboot with a female cast taking over the reins of the titular ghost busters.
Bridesmaids director Paul Feig is in talks with Sony to reboot the '80s classics that starred Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis, although no formal discussions have taken place, according to Variety. The new film would cast female comedians as the leads and the script would be "written from scratch".

The Office writers Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky were tasked with writing a script for a Ghostbusters 3 in 2008 and Men in Black 3 writer Etan Cohen was hired in 2012 to redraft their script. Variety reports, "it's unclear whether another director will be chosen for that project," after Ivan dropped out.
Paul has multiple projects in production including Melissa McCarthy's film Spy, set to release next Memorial Day. He previously directed Melissa in Bridesmaids and the female buddy cop movie The Heat with Sandra Bullock.
The comedic director wrote about the rise of female comedy in an essay for The Hollywood Reporter in 2013.
"The 21st-century woman is finally free to reveal her comedic superiority and inform her penised inferiors that they will never again be permitted to make that "in my pants" joke," he said.
An all-female Ghostbusters movie seems right up Paul's alley.
