Denzel Washington may not be the youngest star in Hollywood but he has proved to still have pulling power after all these years as his latest blockbuster, The Equalizer, is expected to gross a whopping $37 million in its opening weekend.
The Equalizer, starring Chloe Grace Moretz alongside the Oscar-winning actor, opened to incredible figures on Friday with figures confirming that it took $12.6 million on its first night across the US, The Wrap reports. Based on the opening figures, The Equalizer is now expected to gross between a staggering $35 million - $37 million.
The action-packed movie's instant success shouldn't come as a huge surprise though considering it has been directed by Antoine Fuqua who was responsible for helming 2001's Training Day, which won Denzel the Best Actor Oscar. The movie sees Denzel starring as Robert McCall who believes he has put his dark past behind him until he comes across Moretz's Teri, who is under the control of violent Russian gangsters, and seeks to save her.
With those impressive numbers, The Equalizer should easily keep last week's box office number one The Maze Runner, starring Dylan O'Brien and Will Poulter, and 3D animated family flick The Boxtrolls, in second and third place. The Boxtrolls is expected to gross $16.7 million this weekend.
Denzel Washington has scored another box office hit with The Equalizer (Columbia Pictures)
If The Equalizer matches its predicted figures, it's on course to score one of the best September openings in history with Insidious Chapter 2 grossing $40.2 million and Sweet Home Alabama following closely behind with $35.6 million.
