'Desperately Lazy': Monty Python Receives Mixed Reviews From Critics After First Live Comeback Show
Jul 2nd 2014, 11:48

Monty Python made their live return to the stage at London's O2 Arena last night, but the reception from critics hasn't exactly been stellar across the board, with the show being described as "desperately lazy" from one yet "golden" by another.

The surviving members of the comedy sketch group, John Cleese, Michael Palin, Terry Jones, Eric Idle and Terry Gilliam, graced the stage at the capital's iconic venue on Tuesday evening for the first night of 10 on their 'Monty Python Live (Mostly): One Down, Five To Go' tour.

While their fans most likely appreciated the comedy bonanza, critics haven't been so complimentary with the Independent giving it just two stars and calling it a "desperately lazy production."

The Guardian were also fairly unimpressed, taking aim at the poor script, writing: "Not a great deal of effort has gone into updating the script," while adding that the jokes are now "dated."

Reviewer Peter Bradshaw commented: "If Abba re-formed, nobody would expect them to avoid Dancing Queen in favour of new compositions and songs that didn't pass muster at the time."

The Telegraph were a bit more glowing with their review and claimed the show was "more golden than olden," adding that they "conquered."

Although he did note: "John Cleese was hoarse, Terry Jones relied on cue-cards and at times they looked lost amid the spectacular."

The BBC were also rather complimentary, commenting: "The Pythons might getting on a bit, but they still know how - and want - to put on a show."
