Not everyone could be a winner at the Emmy Awards on Monday - both during the ceremony and on the red carpet.

Lena Dunham, Sarah Paulson and Mayim Bialik went all out in gowns that ended up being over the top.

Girls star Lena proved that when it comes to fashion, Girls just want to have fun.

The TV star, who was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, arrived at the Los Angeles event in a pink tutu and shirt.

The frothy tulle skirt was graduated and featured shades from pale pink to dark red, with the train a striking scarlet colour.

Lena wisely tried to tone down her outfit with the simple powder pink silk shirt, featuring Peter Pan collar and cap sleeves.

She showcased her new blonde bombshell hairdo and finished off the look with lashings of red lipstick and heavy black eyeliner.

The 28-year-old brought along boyfriend Jack Antonoff as her plus one. The fun. star wore a classic black tuxedo along with his signature round spectacles.

Sarah turned every head in her very dramatic black strapless net creation, complete with red spots and an extremely full skirt.

The American Horror Story star, who was up for Outstanding Actress in a Miniseries or Movie, opened up about the inspiration behind her look ahead of the show.

'It is like an '80s prom dress, because who wouldn't want to go to the prom when you didn't get to go the first time?' she told HollywoodLife.com.

Interestingly, the 39-year-old was not the only one going for an Eighties prom look, with Mayim Bialik following a similar route.

Odd choice: Julianna Marguilies picked a two-tone black and grey gown with low-scooping back

The Big Bang Theory star and Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series nominee was clad in a blue lace dress with a huge skirt, which swamped her curvaceous figure.

Also failing to set the red carpet alight were Katherine Heigl, who sported a matronly champagne gown, and Kelly Osbourne, who was clad in a black and white lace creation.

Meanwhile, Julianna Margulies picked an unusual two-tone black and grey dress that was not her best look.

Lena kept her outfit decision under wraps until she arrived on the red carpet, and tweeted earlier this month: 'All I'm gonna say about my Emmy dress is that it looks like cake and feels like sweatpants #loveandjoy.'

The creator of the HBO show always has a low-key day before attending awards shows, and it seems Monday was no different.

That morning she posted on Twitter: 'Expert beauty tip: prepare for the Emmys by enjoying some huevos rancheros and allowing your hair to marinate in its own natural oils.'

For the third year in a row, Lena was nominated for the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy award for Girls best lost out to Veep star Julia Louis-Dreyfus.

Sarah's category was in fact won by her co-star Jessica Lange, while Mayim lost to Allison Janney for her role in Mom.
