Shailene Woodley Fans Rejoice! Divergent Finale 'Allegiant' To Be Split Into Two Films
Apr 11th 2014, 15:42

The final novel in Veronica Roth's Divergent trilogy is being split into two films, it has been revealed.

The decision to break Allegiant in half puts the franchise in line with the likes of The Hunger Games, Twilight and Harry Potter before it.

Deadline have confirmed the news today; re-affirming that Shailene Woodley and Theo James will both be back to see their roles of Tris and Four out until the end.

Allegiant Part 1 is slated for release on March 18, 2016; while Part 2 will follow just over a year later on March 24, 2017. The second book, Insurgent, is set to go into production next month ahead of its 2015 release.

"Veronica Roth brings her captivating story to a masterful conclusion in Allegiant, a rich, action-packed book with material that is ideally suited to two strong and fulfilling movies," studio execs said in a statement.

"The storytelling arc and world of the characters lend themselves perfectly to two films, a storytelling strategy that has worked very well for us on the two Twilight Breaking Dawn films and about which we're tremendously enthusiastic for the two upcoming Mockingjay films of The Hunger Games franchise."

The first movie has made a box office darling out of Woodley, who previously enjoyed success in The Descendants and will soon be seen in another high-profile book adaptation; The Fault In Our Stars.

It has so far made $116 million worldwide, including a No1 debut in the US. Its UK launch, however, was much less spectacular.
