George Clooney's proposal to lawyer Amal Alamuddin was not done on a whim.
The 52-year-old actor had carefully planned it all. According to People, the Oscar winner handpicked the ethically mined seven-carat, emerald-cut diamond he would give his British girlfriend. He even had input on the platinum-set design that featured two baguettes on each side of the main stone.
The 36-year-old brunette stunner showed the gem off alongside the actor at his friend Rande Gerber's 52nd birthday dinner in Santa Barbara, added the weekly.

In a photo shared by People, Alamuddin is glowing as she sits beside her fiancé at Gerber's party, which was also attended by Cindy Crawford.
Wearing a black outfit with dangling diamond earrings and her hair worn down, Amal looks red-carpet ready. Clooney opted for a grey suit and black button-down shirt as he held onto a glass of champagne.
The photo looked to be taken inside a restaurant. There was a lit candle on the table.
Her family approves: The Out Of Sight actor reportedly traveled to Dubai to meet her Lebanese parents
In March the former ER hunk traveled to Dubai to meet Amal's Lebanese family.
'They found George very easy to get along with, cool,' one of Amal's family members told People. 'They felt at ease with him immediately.'
Another friend of the Ocean's Eleven star added: 'He waited until he was in the right space to meet the right woman. He has matured and evolved, and he has found someone who can keep up with him.'
They're inseparable: The two have been dating for less than a year and are already spending all their time together, often enjoying dinners at Craig's and Nobu in LA
They have been by their side all along: Clooney pals Rande Gerber and Cindy Crawford, pictured in January, were with the newly engaged couple on April 27 in Santa Barbara
