The Maze Runner looks set to become the latest teen phenomenon to take over the world in a similar fashion to its Twilight and Hunger Games predecessors, storming straight to the top of the US box office on its opening weekend. The movie grossed an impressive $32.5 million according to Rentrak corp since its release last Friday, kicking off its run on the tally with a hopeful start. Dubbed the new teen dystopia genre, the young adult sci-fi dramas are continuing to dominate box offices at the moment and it appears that the trend shows no signs of swaying anytime soon.

The film which follows Thomas, who finds himself trapped with an army of teens, who have their memories wiped and learn that they are all trapped together in a maze. To escape, they soon learn that they will need to team up with fellow "runners" in a bid for survival. The Maze Runner, which stars young Brits Kaya Scodelario and William Poutlter, has now confirmed its sequel, The Scorch Trials , the second of the four Maze Runner novels, will hit cinemas September 2015.

Based on the best-selling books from James Dashner, The Maze Runner trampled all over its nearest rival, Liam Neeson's A Walk Among The Tombstones' which came in second place with $13.1 million. This Is Where I Leave You which boast an all-star comedy lineup including Tina Fey, Jason Bateman and Adam Driver opened with $11.9 million to round off the top three.

Idris Elba's No Good Deed, the actor's chart-topping psychological thriller, took a further $10.2 million to drop three places from the top spot to number four in its second week.
