Helena Bonham Carter has admitted to drunkenly asking Prince William to be a godfather to her daughter.

The King's Speech actress has recalled how she was once on the tipsy side and wanted the second in line to the throne to be the godparent to her daughter Nell, and so asked him.

Talking at the benefit for the Royal Marsden cancer hospital at Windsor Castle, which was hosted by Prince William, People report the 47-year-old as saying: "I got very drunk at one point, and I was determined to ask him to be a godfather to my daughter."

She also added that the father-of-one politely declined, as she said: "He quite wisely said 'no.'"

Helena revealed that thankfully it wasn't at a royal event that she had too many drinks but actually when Prince William was still just dating Kate Middleton and they were on holiday on the Caribbean island of Mustique.

"I admire him. He has got the same grace as both his parents," the British actress said.

American designer Ralph Lauren joined the party at Windsor Castle this week for the charity, of which 31-year-old William is president, and the designer revealed that he would be funding a new breast cancer research facility at the hospital.

The attendees at the party included Cara Delevingne, Kate Moss, Benedict Cumberbatch, Douglas Booth and also Emma Watson with the Harry Potter star and Kate choosing to wear Ralph Lauren designs.

The charity night saw the 200 VIP guests feast on seared hot-smoked salmon, green beans and sugar snaps, roasted fillet of beef with caramelized shallot and tarragon butter, and steamed English asparagus, followed by a chocolate and salted caramel tart.

British actor Benedict Cumberbatch, who has enjoy royal company on more than one occasion since finding fame as super sleuth Sherlock, also spoke about Prince William: "He is just a stand-up guy. I completely forgot to ask him how he got over his jet lag from his trip to Australia, because I was there at the same time and I saw all the commotion when he went to Sydney Opera House."
