'No One Is Safe': George R R Martin Admits Game Of Thrones Showrunners Are Killing Off Characters That Aren't Dead In The Books
May 15th 2014, 15:50

It might be news that members of the Game Of Thrones cast don't want to hear but George R.R. Martin has revealed that "no one is safe" on the hit fantasy drama.

Despite his decision to not kill off certain characters in his books, the author of the fantasy novels admitted that the showrunners of the TV adaptation, have different ideas. In an interview with Conan O'Brien, Martin said:

"As bloody as I am, [showrunners] David Benioff and Dan Weiss are always turning things up to eleven. So really no-one is safe.

"Even the book readers who say, 'Well, this character is safe, he's not in any trouble because he's still in book five', may have an unpleasant surprise."

King Joffrey was killed during season four of Game Of Thrones (HBO/Sky)

Whilst he may have an input in how his books are made into a TV drama, the author went on to say:

"I do kind of squeal a bit when I get the outline, 'Wait a minute, wait a minute, he's not dead in the books, he's still alive in the books'."

Asked if he had mixed feelings about killing King Joffrey, Martin responded with: "Well, I killed him years ago in the books so at that time, we didn't have actually have an actor playing him. Jack Gleeson who played Joffrey was the nicest guy in the world.

"I think it's a good thing that I worte the books before we started making the show because when you make the show and you actually meet the actors, then it's harder to kill them."
