'I've Always Felt A Tremendous Love From The LGBT Community' :Jennfier Lopez Honoured At GLAAD Media Awards
Apr 13th 2014, 11:27

The 25th Annual GLAAD Media Awards honoured Jennifer Lopez during last night's ceremony, with the singer making an emotional speech about her love for the LGBT community.

The 2014 awards were held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles, with comedian Ross Mathews hosting the proceedings.

Mathews kicked off the night by singling out JLo in the audience, who looked gorgeous in a figure-hugging sparkly number, with the comedian declaring: "Honey, I'm gay but there's always room for J.Lo!" .

Unfortunately for the host Jennifer was seen cosying up to her man Casper Smart throughout the night before taking to the stage to collect her Vanguard Award.

The gong celebrates artists and media professionals whose work has increased the profile and understanding of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. Jen's company Lopez's Nuyorican Productions is behind the ABC series The Fosters, which portrays a blended family with lesbian parents.

The singer and American Idol host was keen to thank her supporters as she gave her acceptance speech, and pay tribute to her late aunt who was gay.

"I've always felt a tremendous love from the LGBT community and the LGBT community has always supported me and returned that love," Lopez said. "Marisa was my cool aunt. She was my mom's older sister and she lived in New York City".

"I lived in the Bronx and she lived in Manhattan, it was like worlds away! She wanted to be an actress and I always wanted to be like her. Marisa grew up gay in a time when it meant life could be very difficult and that her struggles were mostly kept t herself."

Alongside Jennifer, Orange Is The New Black star Laverne Cox was presented with the Stephen F. Kolzak award by actress Ellen Page. The award is presented to an openly LGBT media professional who has made a significant difference in promoting equality.

"Excited, humbled and honored to be presenting the Stephen F. Kolzak award to @Lavernecox tonight at the @glaad awards!!!" Ellen wrote ahead of the ceremony.
