Gwen Stefani is undoubtedly one of the coolest and fiercest women in music but she admits that she "freaked out" after agreeing to appear as a judge on the latest season of The Voice, explaining that she was scared about stepping out of her comfort zone and doing something different.
The No Doubt frontwoman will be making her debut on the NBC singing competition tonight alongside fellow newbie Pharrell Williams and regulars Adam Levine and Blake Shelton. While she'll no doubt be in good company, especially sitting beside her longtime friend and collaborator Pharrell, Gwen admits that she briefly questioned her decision to join. "I was afraid, and I had a reason to be. I was really nervous about just coming on the show and doing something so different, and I didn't know what it was going to be," Gwen told the Seattle Pi.
"It's one thing to be in the boys' club with guys you have known since you're 16 years old, but to walk onto this platform with these guys that have been doing it already and not knowing them, I was freaked out a little bit." Gwen added of her decision: "It was so quick and spontaneous, and I think that's what's been the best part about it. I didn't know that I was going to be sitting inside of a black and red spaceship for the next three months."
Gushing over her 'Hollaback Girl' partner Pharrell, Gwen continued: "Being around someone like Pharrell is like a gift. He just has such a big heart. He gives away so much of himself. He's perfect for the show, and he's perfect for these kids because he's very nurturing, and he's very, very generous with himself, and I just like being around that energy."
She continued of her new role: "I have never been in this position to be a coach, and for both of us to look back at everything we've done in our careers and to sit there together and be on the same page ... I'm getting so much out of it. Now I get it why this happened to me at this time in my life why I'm doing this. It's so inspiring and rewarding."

It's no secret that The Voice has had plenty of lineup changes since it launched in the US in 2011, with Christina Aguilera and Cee-Lo Green being replaced by Shakira and Usher last year and now dropping out again for this season with Christina pregnant with her second child and Cee-Lo quitting entirely. Maroon 5 star Adam said of the new additions: "You just never know what the chemistry is going to be like when people come in. These guys came in, and... instantaneously we all just kind of congealed. ... The chemistry was so quick with all of us."
You'll be able to see how Gwen does on her first night this evening on NBC!
