Shelly Sterling is willing to accept a decision by the NBA to strip the entire Sterling family of ownership of the team ... but if that happens she will DEMAND control over the sale ... TMZ Sports has learned.
Sources connected with the Sterling family tell us ... Shelly is actually more involved in the team than Donald Sterling, and she would definitely like to remain an owner, even if Donald is forced out.
Sources tell us ... Shelly is strongly inclined not to fight the NBA if they say the entire family must sell, but her lawyer is currently in talks with the NBA in an effort to avoid such a sale. We're told the lawyer has explained, Shelly and Donald have led separate lives for years, living miles away from each other, and they do no share the same views.
But here's where Shelly draws the line. We're told if the family is forced to sell, she wants to control the sale. She's convinced Donald is going to sue the NBA, and if her interest is part of a prolonged court case it will devalue the team in a big way.
Short story -- if the NBA forces a Sterling family sale and Shelly does not control it, the NBA will probably have 2 separate suits, from estranged husband and wife.
