Sam Smith released his brand new album In The Lonely Hour this week and following on from his huge Money On My Mind success, the artist has now said that in terms of the themes of the LP, he doesn't know how to write upbeat tracks.
Speaking to Capital FM about his latest efforts, the singer said that he writes songs about his own personal experiences and they tend to be rather depressing ones.
"I don't know how to write a happy song!" Sam said, before adding: "There's actually two that are on the album that are quite happy!"
"I challenge myself, it's important for me to challenge myself and take risks," he went on to explain.
"When I was writing this album, I didn't want to write sad songs."

"So to actually go inside myself and pluck out all these horrible depressing thoughts was a risk and was a challenge and I did it," Sam added.
"My challenge now, to write for the second album, would be to write happier," he said, before continuing: "But I think I need to be in a happier place to do it. That would be a challenge for me."
Before the album was released, Sam tweeted: "I just want to say to all before this album comes out. Thanks for changing my life over the past few years, I truly hope you love this album."
Smith then added: "I hope it is the soundtrack to all of those lonely moments. It helped me through mine xx." (sic)
