Mad Men kicked off its final season on Sunday and after years of playing Don Draper, Jon Hamm admits that when the show does finally conclude it will be an emotional moment.
Jon has shot the first half of the final series which hit US TV over the weekend but has yet to start filming the final batch of episodes, something which he seems keen to put off for as long as possible judging by his predictions on what a mess he'll be.
"I think good things must come to an end and whereas some shows just sort of fade away or peter out, the really good shows end", Jon muses to The Metro.
"I don't want to be on a show that overstays its welcome and I'm not interested in being on a show that just runs forever either. Maybe when I'm 60 and ready for some steady kind of repetitive job but not so much right now.
"That said, I'm going to be an absolute disaster when it does end. There will be tears, there will probably be fist fights and hair-pulling. It will be Biblical in its emotion".
Jon Hamm prepares to say goodbye to Don Draper (WENN)
Of his character, Jon admits that he's often bemused by how much of an idol he is to both men and women. "He is certainly no role model", the actor says. "But I think there's something fundamentally in Don Draper that people can identify with – a dissatisfaction, a striving for something, a kind of ennui. I can relate to being in a place in your life when you think: 'Is this all there is?'"
So what's next for the actor who has spent over seven years on Mad Men? Something entirely different, the 43-year-old hopes.
"I do have a new film, Million Dollar Arm [in which he plays a sports agent], coming out in May. We'll see if people like me in this other aspect or if they only want to see me brooding and drinking and whoring around".
