Game Of Thrones Star Jack Gleeson Admits He Knew About Purple Wedding Twist 'From Day One'
Apr 14th 2014, 16:15

Game of Thrones gave viewers a massive shock in last night's second episode of the fourth series. With King Joffrey's wedding not exactly ending on the best note for the groom, Jack Gleeson has spoken out on the moment that has had everyone talking. Warning massive spoilers ahead.

Sunday night's GoT saw the demise of Joffrey Baratheon (Gleeson) who was murdered after marrying Margery (Dormer) in the hugely anticipated Westeros wedding. The murder took place during the reception when the young king took a sip of his wine and began to die from the effects of the poisoned liquid, in what were some of GoT's most horrific scenes.

Jack has been speaking with Entertainment Weekly about the demise of his character, admitting it was difficult to film the death scenes. "It was tough," Gleeson explains. "I suppose it's one of those things that you have no prior experience in. I've never seen anyone die. It's hard to imagine what it would be like.

"But [director] Alex [Graves] very kindly walked me through it. It was fun in the end, but kind of stressful to be so focused, but acting like you're completely unfocused. Difficult, but exciting."

Gleeson also confessed that he knew about his character's death from the very beginning:

"I knew from Day 1. When I got the part, I read the first book. And before that, I Googled the character summaries," he said. "There will be a delight that the person tormenting their favorite characters is gone, but I would like to think there's a certain sadness at the loss of the delight people take in hating a character like Joffrey."

Don't expect to see the young actor in anything else though, as the 21-year-old has admitted he's going to retire! "I've been acting since age 8. I just stopped enjoying it as much as I used to," he explains.

"And now there's the prospect of doing it for a living, whereas up until now it was always something I did for recreation with my friends, or in the summer for some fun. I enjoyed it. When you make a living from something, it changes your relationship with it. It's not like I hate it, it's just not what I want to do."
