Transcendence Bombs At The Box Office: Johnny Depp's Biggest Ever Film Flops
Apr 21st 2014, 19:17

Johnny Depp, all star support from Morgan Freeman, executive producer Christopher Nolan and sci-fi thrills, Transcendence was meant to be Easter weekend's box office hit but as the numbers come in it's looking like yet another flop for Johnny.

Transcendence marks the actor's worst ever feature film release (for more than 3000 theatres), taking just $11 million in the US this weekend and that's on the back of a massive budget of $100 million.

That $11 million pales in comparison to the current number one film in the US, Captain America: Winter Soldier, which has raked in more than $200 million in America alone in the past three weeks. That more than covers its $170 million budget.

In fact, Depp hasn't enjoyed a non-franchise, non-animated hit since 2009's Public Enemies and he's a long way from his career high just three years ago with the release of the fourth Pirates of the Caribbean movie, On Stranger Tides. The entire franchise has earned a combined $1.2 billion in America and scored Depp a Best Actor Oscar nomination. So when did it all start going wrong?

Secret Window 2004

Before Transcendence, this horror flick was Depp's worst performer, taking just $18.2 million but seemed to be just a blip as Depp was back on top with Charlie and The Chocolate Factory and the third Pirates movie two years later.

The Tourist 2010

This 2010 film with Angelina Jolie was Depp's first major flop as it only made $67 million on a $100 million budget and the terrible reviews didn't help.

The Rum Diary 2011

Taking just $5 million in its opening weekend, Depp fans just weren't that keen on seeing the actor play 1950s journalist Hunter S Thompson. It is the movie where the star meant his bride-to-be Amber Heard though.

Dark Shadows 2012

Tim Burton, 70s vampires? It's got all the hallmarks of a great Depp movie but this critically panned outing earned $245 million at the global box office, doesn't sound too terrible right? That's compared to a budget of $150 million. Movie math dictates that a film should take at least twice it's production budget before it can even think about making a decent profit.

The Lone Ranger 2013

Disney weren't happy when this hugely hyped $215 million movie brought in only $260 million at the global box office. The movie was billed as the summer's big blockbuster with the supposed dream team of Depp and Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski, but the box office bomb meant any plans for a new franchise were promptly scrapped.
