'It Was A Brave Step': Ricky Wilson Takes Credit For Making The Voice Cool For Bands
Apr 23rd 2014, 14:47

Ricky Wilson may have rattled a few cages after boldly claiming to have made it cool for bands to appear on talent competitions such as The Voice, declaring himself the "first alternative musician to judge" on that type of show.

The Kaiser Chiefs rocker, who will be embarking on a brief UK tour with the band next year, recently finished his first stint as a coach on the BBC One show alongside judges Kylie Minogue, Tom Jones and will.i.am.

Ricky, 36, admits that he hopes he has made it acceptable to appear as a coach on talent shows despite originally coming from a cool indie band.

"This is me being a big head here, so I need to be careful – but when it was announced that Chris Martin was doing the American one," Ricky told The Metro.

"I'd like to think that it came into his head when he was offered it that it was maybe something that we're allowed to do. I was probably the first alternative musician to judge on a reality show and I think it was a brave step to do that, but I see it as a step in the door."

However, the 'I Predict A Riot' singer admits that he's unsure whether a show like The Voice would be able to find the next successful rock band as they would have to tone down their antics for TV.

"I don't think the world is ready for that yet because I don't think any bands would go on it yet," Ricky revealed.

"You can't jump in there with loads of guitars and be swigging beer from plastic cups on prime time TV like we do on stage, but I think we can get our foot in the door. But we are going to have to open it very gently."

Earlier this week, Ricky admitted that he is yet to be asked to return to The Voice panel for a second year, telling The Sun: "I haven't been asked yet, for a start. People keep telling me rumours of who might join the panel and I'm not sure there'd be a space for me. It would definitely depend on the coaches.

"I'm due to have lunch with The Voice bosses at some point."
