Co-writer Nicole Perlman confirms work on a sequel.
Guardians of the Galaxy doesn't premiere for another week, but its director and writer James Gunn already has plans for the sequel.
"James will be directing Guardians 2, so he would also be writing Guardians 2," his co-writer Nicole Perlman told The Wrap.

The first Guardians has a resounding buzz around it already, and the call for more will only grow once the movie hits theaters on Friday, Aug. 1. Marvel has not confirmed a sequel, but many have speculated on its place in one of the seven empty dates Marvel announced this month.
Although not officially confirmed, its widely rumored Doctor Strange will debut on Marvel eighth open date July 8, 2016.
Nicole is quite certain Guardians will have a follow up due to the positive reception the movie has already garnered.
"Of course they would want to make a sequel as long as it does well and people are excited about it, they'll wanna do a sequel. So, it's going to happen," she said.
Nicole is not as certain about her future on the next film. She brought Marvel the movie's original concept out of the movie studio's writers program. James then polished the script that became Nicole's first produced film credit.
Guardians of the Galaxy stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper.
